Cesena Ultimo Miglio: An Innovative Model for Sustainable Urban Logistics

Cesena Ultimo Miglio: An Innovative Model for Sustainable Urban Logistics

The management of urban freight logistics is one of the key challenges for the sustainability of cities. In recent years, particularly in historic city centres, the growth in deliveries has led to increased urban congestion, often exacerbated by partially loaded trips and empty return journeys made by commercial vehicles, with negative impacts on traffic, the environment and quality of life.

Within this context, Cesena Ultimo Miglio is a project promoted by the Municipality of Cesena, with the participation of Clust-ER Urban Economy as a project partner. The initiative aims to define an integrated urban freight logistics model that is effective, environmentally sustainable and shared by economic operators, to be tested in a pilot area within the historic centre.

The project is based on a structured pathway that combines:

  • analysis of the existing logistics system;
  • a participatory process involving local companies and operators;
  • a pilot testing phase in the historic centre;
  • communication and dissemination activities to share results and outcomes.

The main expected results include a reduction in urban congestion and pollutant emissions, improved delivery efficiency, and higher levels of satisfaction among the economic activities involved.
